the river remembers. A lotus pressed flat between pages,

a heron's feather, ink the colour of silt.

She has been watching the longest.

II. The Print

The Print

Lotus, herons, the still water of the river — drawn

in iron-gall ink that ages with the cotton. The Nile

does not hurry. Neither does the print.

We make in fifties. We make once. Every chapter is fifty heavy-cotton garments, hand-drawn, screen-printed at midnight, dyed in copper buckets in Heliopolis. There is no Chapter I, N° 051 — only what you carry, and what stays.
